Tibco acquires Jaspersoft for $185 million

Tibco has acquired Jaspersoft for $185 million in a deal that will give it a widely used embedded business-intelligence suite to sell alongside its existing Spotfire analytics product. Jaspersoft uses a commercial open-source business model, offering a community edition of its software under the general public license at no charge, while offering more fully featured commercial editions as well as support services.

Tibco on Monday said it has acquired Jaspersoft, which specializes in open source business intelligence tools, for $185 million. Jaspersoft allows developers to embed reporting, analytics and dashboards into applications via multiple data sources. Tibco’s claim to fame is messaging, data discovery and analytics. Jaspersoft’s open source business intelligence software has 16 million downloads and more than 140,000 production deployments and 2,000 commercial customers. The plan for the acquisition, which is expected to be neutral to non-GAAP earnings in 2014, gives Tibco a more rounded portfolio. Tibco now wants to track the data and provide the embedded reporting to other applications.
