LG’s new television is literally paper-thin

The term “paper-thin” doesn’t always mean that something is literally as thin as paper, just that it’s incredibly thin. However, with LG’s new 55-inch television, the term paper-thin couldn’t be more literal, as the device is less than a millimeter thick and weighs a mere four pounds. It’s so lightweight that you can put it on your wall using a magnet. 

LG has shown off a 55-inch television that’s less than a millimetre thick and can easily be stuck to your wall like a fridge magnet. The ‘wallpaper’ TV weighs just 1.9kg and has an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display. These sorts of displays are thinner and more efficient than other types of display, including LCD, LED and plasma models – although they are expensive to produce and so tend to cost a lot more. The TV hangs thanks to magnetic panel that you fix to the wall – and can be removed with ease. The device is much thinner than LG’s current flagship 55-inch OLED TV that comes in at 4.3mm thick. At the moment, the TV is just a prototype used to show off the company’s OLED technology – LG hasn’t announced plans to release it as a product quite yet. At the press conference where the skinny display was unveiled, LG’s Yeo Sang-deog told reporters that the company was ramping up production of OLED televisions and will sell 600,000 of them this year and 1.5 million in 2016.
