Samsung is shutting down Milk Video on November 20th

Samsung expansion into the world of media has been… less than successful. Milk Video is one of the company’s attempts to create a premium entertainment service, one which made it easy for users to find and share videos that are popular online, but that attempt has been met with failure. The company has announced that Milk Video will be shutting down on November 20th, a little more than a year after its release. While the reasons weren’t specified, it’s pretty obvious that a lack of users is behind the decision.

Samsung is shuttering its video streaming app “Milk Video” just one year and a day after launching it. In a message posted to the Google Play listing for the app, the South Korean electronics company said that it will be closing down the app before the end of the year. “While we remain committed to providing premium entertainment services,” it says, “we have decided to end support for the Samsung Milk Video app as of November 20, 2015.” The company does not provide a reason. Milk Video, which was launched on November 19 last year, let users follow others and subscribe and share content. It was one of several of Samsung’s “Milk” products. There’s also Milk Music, and Milk VR, which curates virtual reality video. There have been rumblings about Milk for a while now: Back in May, Variety reported that Media Solutions Center America — the department behind Milk — was laying off 15% of its 250-strong workforce. And Samsung VP of content and services Kevin Swint reportedly left the unit at around the same time. It’s not clear whether the closure of Milk Video will result in more layoffs. We’ve reached out to Samsung for comment, and will update this story when it responds.
