Has technology become so advanced that we can’t tell fantasy from reality?

Everyone has been fooled at one time or another. We see a movie, a video, an app, a program, or any other variation of advanced graphic technology that makes us question whether it’s real or not. YouTube is rife with videos that are doctored in ways that make them look real.

This is a problem.

Some of these videos would have easily passed an authenticity test as recently as two decades ago. Even before that, special effects such as those in Star Wars were quite convincing over three decade ago. Today, we simply can’t trust what we see on television or computers. There are even technologies that would make us unable to trust our own eyes.

I will be working on a feature post about the technologies that fool our mind and I encourage readers to send me some tips if you’ve seen some exceptional fake videos that could easily be real under normal scrutiny. In the meantime, my question is about the consequences. Is there something happening behind the scenes that takes advantage of this technology to fool us? Even better, are there fake videos put out for the purpose of debunking real videos?

What do you think?
