OpenAI has announced a new global initiative called “OpenAI for Countries”, designed to transform how artificial intelligence is delivered worldwide. This new program marks a major step forward in AI collaboration between OpenAI and various governments. Under OpenAI for Countries, the company will partner directly with governments to help build the local infrastructure needed for AI. This includes expanding data center capacity and customizing AI products like ChatGPT to match each country’s languages, culture, and needs.

OpenAI confirmed that funding for the program will come from both OpenAI and national governments. The company aims to launch 10 international projects initially, although the specific countries have not yet been disclosed. OpenAI said it hopes to spread democratic AI. In simpler terms, OpenAI wants to encourage nations to adopt Western-developed AI models, especially its own instead of turning to Chinese alternatives.

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI for Countries is strategically aligned with Project Stargate, another major OpenAI initiative that focuses on building AI data centers across the world. The two programs may share infrastructure or even benefit from the same investors.
