Winamp was originally popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, thanks to its small download size and flexibility, and this is why AOL acquired Winamp’s parent company, Nullsoft, in 1999 for $80 million.
AOL will be shutting down Winamp on December 20th, after operating for 15 years. AOL, which acquired Winamp parent company Nullsoft in 1999 for $80 million, will be closing the Winamp.com website and associated web services, something which will affect existing Winamp installations, and will stop offering the media player for download.
