Apple said on Wednesday that it is adding more iPad models to its Self-Service Repair program. By giving users access to official tools, components, and troubleshooting information, this action increases user control over device maintenance.

Genuine Apple parts and repair kits will be available for purchase starting Thursday for owners of iPads in compatible models, such as the iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16). Displays, batteries, cameras, and external charging connections are among the parts that are available. Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions, repair manuals, and specialized toolkits are also available to customers for purchase or rental.

Said Brian Naumann, Apple’s vice president of AppleCare, in a press release.

“At Apple, our goal is to create the world’s greatest products that last as long as possible,” “With today’s announcement, we’re excited to expand our repair services to more customers, enabling them to further extend the life of their products — all without compromising safety, security, or privacy.”

The Self-Service Repair program, which was first introduced in 2022, provides the same tools that Apple Store personnel and Apple Authorized Service Providers use to enable users who feel comfortable doing their repairs. Apple says the program now supports 65 Apple products, including the recently released iPhone 16e, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio. The company shared that Canada will soon become the 34th country where Apple offers Self-Service Repair.

Additionally, Apple provided additional information about its Genuine Supplies Distributor program, which enables independent mobile repair specialists to place orders for authentic Apple components and service supplies. Authorized third-party distributors, including MobileSentrix in the United States and MobileSentrix and Mobileparts shop in Europe, offer these parts. Displays, batteries, and charging ports are just a few of the Apple parts that Genuine Parts Distributor has available for iPhone repairs; iPad parts will be available tomorrow.

A large selection of iPhone parts, such as screens, batteries, and charging ports, is presently supported by Genuine Parts Distributor. Starting tomorrow, iPad components will be made available. The program’s goals are to support smaller repair businesses and give consumers additional options. Apple has put in significant effort to expand its repair ecosystem throughout the years. Presently accessible choices consist of mail-in services, Self-Service Repair, Apple Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers, Apple Store locations, and the Genuine Parts Distributor program.

Our Opinion:

Apple’s move to include iPads in its Self-Service Repair program is a big step toward giving users more freedom and control over their devices. It’s especially helpful for tech-savvy people who want to avoid expensive repair fees or long wait times. By also supporting independent repair shops, Apple is opening the door to more affordable and convenient repair options, which is a win for consumers. This kind of flexibility has been long overdue, and it’s great to see Apple moving in the right direction.
