Microsoft’s Kinect Trumps Apple for ‘Fastest-Selling’ Device Title

Kinect sensor imageWhat outpaced the ubiquitous Apple iPad and iPhone in terms of sales? According to the Guinness World Records, it’s the Kinect for the Xbox 360.

Kinect has officially become the Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device. The device enables users to play video games without the use of a traditional controller. On average, 133,333 Kinects were sold each day between November 2010 and January 2011. The launch of the device was more successful than either the iPhone or the iPad’s launch.

“The sales figures here speak for themselves,” says Gaz Deaves, Editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition. “We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector.”

According to Microsoft, sales of standalone Kinect games have surpassed 10 million units, equaling sales of the Kinect sensors. The overwhelming success of this device shows that controller-free entertainment is here to stay.

The record-breaking feat was published in the Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition, which is available in bookstores now.
