Mobile ad revenue will explode this year while desktop ads dwindle

Google will see a surge in mobile advertising revenue in 2014 even as revenue from desktop web ads continues to decline, according to a new report from research firm eMarketer. eMarketer estimates that globally, Google’s total net advertising revenue will jump 14 percent to $43.5 billion in 2014, up from $38.3 billion in 2013. In terms of Google’s total net ad revenues, including display, eMarketer said mobile search is gaining a significant share.

Not surprisingly, as consumers move to mobile, so do the advertising dollars. In a report published today, eMarketer estimates that desktop ad search spending will drop by $1.4 billion, or 9.4 percent less than last year. Meanwhile, mobile search spending will get a huge 82 percent boost to reach $9 billion. The figures follow the overall trends for both ad categories: Desktop search ad growth has been declining steadily over the past few years. Mobile search ad spending, on the other hand, has more than doubled its growth over the past two years (see chart below).
