Razer’s hackable virtual reality headset is now available to pre-order

53 sec read

Ever since Razer first unveiled the OSVR at CES in January, we haven’t heard much about the virtual reality headset, aside from the fact that Razer plans to separate it from the likes of the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift by focusing on being hackable. The headset is completely open source, and can be customized to your heart’s content, so if you’re the kind of person that likes fiddling with their hardware, you’ll be happy to know that Razer opened up pre-orders this morning.

Gaming accessory manufacturer Razer has announced its interesting OSVR virtual reality headset is now available for public pre-orders. The hackable headset, which was announced at CES in January and has been gradually improving throughout 2015, can be snapped up for $299. That’s about £194, while those purchasing from the UK will also benefit from free shipping. The OSVR Hacker Development Kit v1.3 feature a Full HD 5.5-inch 120Hz silver screen OLED display, which offers brighter and clearer images. There’s also lower latency rendering thanks to the OSVR Render Manager. The other attraction for developers and keen hobbyists, who quickly snapped up 10,000 versions of the previously available runs, is the ability to hack into the OSVR. The dev kit is also designed to be upgradable, allowing users to swap out the faceplate, displaces and other components, in order to customise their experiences. As the name suggests the headset is completely open source, meaning users can even download the 3D files in order to create their own VR device.
