The Xiaomi Mi5 smartphone could feature a sapphire display

45 sec read

Prior to the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, there were many rumors suggesting that Apple could launch these new phones with sapphire displays, but safe to say that did not happen. Apple was later beaten to the punch by Kyocera and now if the rumors are to be believed, Apple could once again play second fiddle to the likes of Xiaomi. A new rumor has revealed that Xiaomi could be planning to use sapphire for their Xiaomi Mi5 smartphone.

Apparently, what we’re seeing above is Xiaomi’s next flagship smartphone, which could be called Mi5, or Mi4s. While this image was spotted earlier today, we now have more (unconfirmed) details about the upcoming handset. According to DigiTimes and undisclosed industry sources in China, Xiaomi may want to use sapphire to protect the display of the Mi5. At the same time, DigiTimes notes that, if Xiaomi will indeed go ahead with this plan, it could have difficulties in securing enough sapphire displays, as the current production capacity is too low to meet the demand. As previously reported, the screen of the new handset could be a 5.7-inch one with 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD). Other features may include a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor, 3 GB of RAM, and a 20.7 MP rear camera.
