TikTok has introduced a new way for users to control what they see on their For You page. The platform is now rolling out Smart Keyword Filters powered by technology that helps limit content users don’t want to see. TikTok announced this update on Tuesday. Previously, users could use keyword filters to block specific words or phrases from appearing in their feed. But the new Smart Keyword Filters go a step further by also hiding content with related or similar terms. For example, if you filter out the word “remodeling,” TikTok will now also remove posts containing “renovation” and “renovations.” Users will soon be able to select or deselect any of the added keywords according to their preferences.
Additionally, TikTok is doubling the number of keywords you can filter, from 100 to 200, and says it will soon allow bulk keyword uploads. According to the business, the more often the Smart Keyword Filters are used, the more accurate they will become. Moreover, TikTok is growing its Manage Topics feature. This feature is now being launched globally after undergoing tests in the United States in August 2024. Users are able to personalize the quantity of information they want to access on various topics, such as comedy, athletics, cuisine, dancing, and others. Users can enter Settings, choose “Content Preferences,” and click on “Manage Topics” to adjust sliders for viewing more or fewer specific kinds of video.
This doesn’t remove content completely, but it helps shift the focus of the feed. TikTok said today that it will be releasing a new educational guide to assist users in configuring and comprehending their For You feed.
Our opinion:
TikTok is taking a much-needed step by attempting to provide users greater control over their experience. Users must filter out the stuff they don’t want to view because there is so much of it available. The addition of Smart Keyword Filters and an expanded Manage Topics tool makes personalizing the feed easier and more effective. These updates not only improve user satisfaction but also reflect TikTok’s effort to create a safer and more relevant platform for everyone.
