Google has launched powerful new AI tools that will help defend Chrome users from scams like never before. The tech giant revealed that it is now using Gemini Nano, its advanced on-device large language model (LLM), on Chrome for desktop. This tool will analyze websites in real time and spot scams instantly, even those that are completely new. But that’s not all Chrome for Android is also getting AI-powered scam alerts that warn users about spam or suspicious notifications before they even click on them.

Google explained that Chrome’s Enhanced Protection mode part of its Safe Browsing feature already gives users 2x better protection from phishing and threats compared to the Standard mode. Now, with Gemini Nano, this protection will become even stronger. Google said in a blog post.

“Gemini Nano’s LLM is perfect for this use because of its ability to distill the varied, complex nature of websites, helping us adapt to new scam tactics more quickly,”

Smarter Warnings, Safer Browsing, and Stronger Scam Detection

Currently, Google is already using this AI-powered defense to stop remote tech support scams. In the future, this smart protection will expand to cover even more scam types on Android and other devices. The update also tackles a growing problem: scammy notifications from shady websites. Many malicious sites trick users by sending fake alerts or misleading messages. Now, Chrome’s on-device machine learning will detect and flag such notifications, warning users before damage is done.

If a notification is marked as suspicious, users will get a choice: unsubscribe, or view what was blocked. If they think the warning was wrong, they can still allow future notifications from that site. Google also shared that it has been using AI in Search to fight scams at scale. According to the company, its AI systems now block hundreds of millions of scammy results every day and they’re catching 20x more scammy pages than before.

One major area of concern has been fake airline customer service scams. Criminals trick users searching for flight help with fake phone numbers. But thanks to AI, Google has reduced these scams by over 80%, making it much safer for people using Search.
