Wednesday’s Pips lands at 7/10. Easy rewards reading one forced placement before committing to columns; Medium locks in a double-4 early via an equal-constraint zone; Hard escalates to ten pieces where the left-column anchor and four 1-pip dominoes define the solving order. Hints below, answers at the bottom.
Hints (spoiler-free)
The 5|3 dominates the first column, where both zones require matching pip counts on adjacent sides. Place it vertically and the column resolves immediately. From there, 1|5 slots into the second column and 4|5 into the third. The two horizontal dominoes, 2|1 and 5|2, close out the remaining rows. Five pieces total; no backtracking required once the first-column anchor is set.
The 4|4 double locks into the upper-left zone, which demands equal pip values on both halves, and 4|4 is the only piece that satisfies that constraint at this position. With the double placed, the adjacent row opens: 1|2 fills the teal constraint zone to the right. Working down the columns, 5|3 claims the lower-left and 1|4 closes the bottom row alongside it. The 0|2 and 0|4 dominoes handle the right-side columns, each satisfying a strict pip-count limit.
The 1|0 in the left column is the board’s starting point: 0 sits in the light blue zone and 1 enters the purple zone above it. With that anchor set, 6|4 drops into the third column and 1|6 runs horizontally along the top row. Row two then forces 6|0. The interior fills from there: 1|2 slots into row three, 1|3 into column five. Four pieces share the 1-pip value on at least one half, and placing them in sequence collapses the remaining options. 4|3 takes the fifth row, 3|2 and 3|5 close the diagonal zones, and 2|2 anchors the last column.
NYT Pips rewards solvers who read zone constraints before placing anything. The most restricted zone accepts only one piece; commit to it and the adjacent zones narrow automatically. High doubles like 4|4 and 2|2 have fewer legal positions than mixed pieces; place them early and the board resolves in sequence.
