On Monday, Qualcomm announced the acquisition of VinAI’s AI division without disclosing any monetary details. The CEO of VinAi will be joining Qualcomm. The SVP of Engineering, Jilei Hou, said in a press release

“This acquisition underscores our commitment to dedicating the necessary resources to R&D that makes us the driving force behind the next wave of AI innovation. By bringing in high-caliber talent from VinAI, we are strengthening our ability to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions that will benefit a wide range of industries and consumers.”

VinAI is a Hanoi-based AI research company. It was founded by former DeepMind research scientist Hung Bui. The company initially focused on developing AI-powered automotive products and then further expanded to developing multiple AI technologies which includes language models and computer vision algorithms. This AI company is backed by VinGroup, a Vietnamese based company that creates solutions including in-cabin monitoring, security, and smart parking systems. 

In 2023, Hung Bui stated in an interview with Forbes that the AI company had around 200 employees. The company has its startup offices in Hanoi, US and Australia. The company aims to expand its services to Qualcomm’s product families. It includes developing software and chips for vehicles, smartphones, and PCs. About these expansion ideas, Bui said 

“Our team’s expertise in generative AI and machine learning will help accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can transform the way we live and work,”

Qualcomm Expansion and Investment in AI

Qualcomm is a US-based company founded in 1985. It creates semiconductors, tools, and software for OEMs. This is Qualcomm’s second acquisition this year. In early March, Qualcomm purchased Edge Impulse, a German AI and Internet of Things company. These acquisitions highlight the significance of AI technology in semiconductor and software companies and depict Qualcomm’s expansion and investment in AI technology.
