Google has officially announced that it will soon end support for Fitbit smartwatches. Devices like Fitbit Sense, including Sense 2, Fitbit Versa 2 to Versa 4, utilize voice assistance from Google Assistant. Users of these models won’t be able to find these features soon if they are not disabled yet.
Official PhaseOut Notification
Google first announced the phaseout last month, and it has been informing users through in-device and email notifications. According to a recent community post:
“Our the next few weeks, we will be phasing out Google Assistant on your Fitbit devices.”
Hence, these smartwatches will no longer be able to use the voice-controlled activity feature via Google Assistant.
Although Google Assistant will be removed from Fitbit smartwatches, Amazon Alexa will remain accessible in some supported regions, including the U.S. Alexa will still be around, and users will be able to command it for tasks like timers and workout updates.
Reason Behind The Removal
It seems strange that Google, the owner of Fitbit, is cutting out its assistant and pushing users towards Alexa. But this move is a bigger step toward rebuilding its voice assistant ecosystem. Google has been shifting its focus to Gemini since 2024, thus deprecating several features of Google Assistant.
Even though it is set that Gemini will replace the Google Assistant, it is still not certain whether Gemini will be available to use on current or old Fitbit smartwatches or not. Apart from discontinuing Google Assistant, there is no official announcement about its replacement aside from the continued support for Alexa.
