Apple’s internal AI choices are once again in the limelight after a recent Bloomberg report disclosed that John Giannandrea, the ex-leader of Siri, originally pushed for the integration of Google’s Gemini rather than OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri.
Giannandrea, who had prior experience at Google and was subsequently downgraded during Apple’s leadership reorganization in March, allegedly expressed worries regarding ChatGPT’s sustainability and its methods for managing sensitive user information. He thought that Google’s Gemini would be a more secure and sustainable choice than Apple’s initial third-party AI chatbot integrated into Siri.
Notwithstanding his doubts, Apple chose to proceed with ChatGPT integration, publicly revealing the decision at WWDC 2024 and launching the feature for users in December. The incorporation enables Siri to transfer specific, intricate queries to ChatGPT when it is unable to give a straightforward response.A significant move towards a more accessible AI environment, Apple has revealed plans to roll out several chatbot services like Google Gemini into future Siri releases.
In addition, the tech giant is in early talks with AI search engine Perplexity about whether to make it a replacement for ChatGPT in Siri and whether to add it as an alternative search engine option to Safari, Bloomberg indicates. This innovation highlights Apple’s overall drive to get into the AI arena by enhancing its products and giving customers more choices and flexibility regarding how they interface with smart assistants.
