GM Recalls 600,000 Trucks, SUVs Citing Potential Engine Catastrophe

GM Recalls Nearly 600,000 Vehicles Over Engine Risk

Due to the possibility of unexpected V8 engine failure, which increases the risk of a collision, General Motors is recalling 597,630 of its full-size trucks and SUVs in the United States. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records issued Tuesday state that manufacturing flaws in the crankshaft and/or linking rod components of an engine "can lead to engine damage and engine failure."

Following instances of engine failure in GM cars, particularly the company's best-selling Silverado, U.S. auto safety officials launched an inquiry, which coincided with the recall. In January, after 39 complaints from owners of GM vehicles with L87 V8 engines, the NHTSA announced that it was looking into an estimated 877,710 vehicles. The L87 V8 engine is produced by GM at its assembly facilities in St. Catharines, Ontario; Spring Hill, Tennessee; and Tonawanda, New York.

Customer service numbers for Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC are 1-800-333-4223, 1-800-222-1020, and 1-800-462-8782, respectively. N252494000 is GM's number for this recall.

Additionally, owners can visit nhtsa.gov or call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153). 25V-274 is the NHTSA's recall number.
