Google, Intel and Sony Team Up for GoogleTV

45 sec read

gtvWhere Microsoft and Apple have failed, Google, those arrogant so-and-so’s, think they can succeed. Today, the New York Times reported the massive search company is teaming up with both Intel and Sony to produce technology to take control of your living room.

Details are sketchy so far, and no-one quite knows if ‘GoogleTV’, as the project has been dubbed, will be comprised of a set-top box, a open software platform or something else.

But with Intel and Sony on board, it seems likely that some sort of hardware will be involved, whether a standalone box or an solution that will be integrated into TVs. Reports also indicate that, since the service or device will run on Google’s Android OS, it will be made open to developers, who would add their own services and apps, like an application for Twitter or the weather. Also on board are Logitech, makers of the excellent Harmony universal remotes.

Whether or not we need another tech company trying to elbow their way into the living room is a point no-one seems to agree on. With millions of smartphones out there and tablets about to become ubiquitous, do we really want the web on our TVs? Nobody knows – but Google certainly seems to think so.
