NotebookLM, having been restrained to desktop browsers like a grad student to their thesis deadline, is just about ready to turn around. From May 20th onwards, it is going to be available on the mobile. Yes, Google’s note-taking wonder is now going to be right by your side in class, the cafe, and even the couch on which you pretend to study.

NotebookLM, an AI note-taking and research assistant by Google, will soon be available for smartphones and tablets. Users will be able to access it on Android and on iOS through dedicated apps starting May 20th this year, which marks the first time NotebookLM will be available outside the desktop. The respective app store listings state that the apps are currently available for pre-order on the App Store and pre-registration on Google Play. Immediately after release, they will be automatically downloaded to the devices of users willing to use them.

NotebookLM Features

NotebookLM is a product by Google AI aimed specifically at helping students, researchers, and knowledge thirsty workers by making their learning from dense materials or complex works easier. The product was first launched in 2023 and includes smart summaries, semantic search, and the ability to actually query documents. Another big addition is the ‘Audio Overviews’ feature, which transforms written notes and documents into AI-generated podcast-type audio summaries. This allows for easier absorption of content while on the go.

The mobile version would streamline the entire interface for creating and browsing notebooks, uploading new sources in real time directly from one’s phone, and accessing documents already saved on the cloud. Most importantly, mobile apps will support Audio Overviews so that users can review materials for study or projects during traveling or between meetings.

Easy Access to Multi Devices & Google I/O Timing

In addition, NotebookLM supports handheld devices and tablets, from Android to iOS, making it very flexible. So, on larger screens such as iPads or Android tablets, users can multitask much more efficiently, easily switching between notebooks, documents, and several applications.

The other factor worth mentioning is that the rollout falls on May 20th, which is the first day of the Google I/O 2025. That certainly implies that Google might use its developer conference to focus on all of the app’s capabilities, show AI integrations, and introduce some upgrades to the platform.

NotebookLM’s Future Productivity

While Google has not yet issued the comprehensive changelog, screenshots from the app store listings seem to indicate a nice clean design, with access to all of the important NotebookLM features. Since the desktop is more or less popular between early adopters, therefore the mobile apps can help broaden the user base of NotebookLM, especially for those who appreciate flexible AI tools for on the go uses. As Google expands its AI push throughout productivity tools, the NotebookLM mobile apps may very well be a preview of what’s in store for Docs, Drive, and other Workspace services.

With mobility and context-aware tools fast becoming the norm within our workflows rather than a novelty, artificial intelligence is becoming more and more embedded in those workflows. If Google plays it right, NotebookLM could evolve into the AI assistant for students and professionals who didn’t know they needed it, but soon will find a life without it impossible.
