As technology advances at a breathtaking pace, Google announced that it would replace its decade-long Google Assistant with Gemini later this year. This bold move comes in response to the ever-growing expectations of users for a more versatile and sophisticated AI assistant, along with unparalleled capabilities of Gemini that promise to redefine the way users interact with technology.
Since its launch in 2024, Gemini has been continuously updated keeping in view the most requested features, including playing music and setting timers. Moreover, the aap is launched in more than 200 countries and is available in over 40 languages, defining its real life usage for diverse customers.
Google Assistant vs Gemini
Unlike Gemini, Google Assistant is a virtual assistant based on two-way conversation and limited to home automation and mobile devices. However, with the advance AI features, Gemini could be used for free-flowing, multimodal conversations via Gemini Live. Comparing the capabilities of Google Assistant and Gemini, Google said in its blog post
“When we launched Google Assistant in 2016, natural language processing and voice recognition technology unlocked a more natural way to get help from Google. Nearly a decade later, we’re in the midst of another platform shift — this time, generative AI is transforming the way we interact with technology.”
Another interesting feature of Gemini is Gemini Extensions that it allows users do things from Pixels like asking to dim room lights and turn off the TV, highlighting the expansion of Gemini usage in daily applications. The lists of Gemini extensions also include Google Tasks, and Google Calendar. Deep Research, another application of Gemini, could be used as a personal research assistant. Above all, Gemini can answer the queries of the users even when the phone is locked. These features highlight the versatile and improved features of an assistant that Google can provide to its users.
Google Assistant to Retire
Considering these advancements of Gemini and its redefining role of an assistant, Google announced that it will begin transitioning users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini and by the end of the year, Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for download on app stores.
Gemini’s Expansion
Along with Google’s plan to transition to Gemini, it envisions extending Gemini’s capabilities to a wide range of devices, including cars, smartwatches, and tablets. Additionally, home devices such as smart speakers and TVs will receive a next-generation breakthrough, ensuring a seamless and intelligent ecosystem for all daily-use gadgets.
As AI is integrating more and more in digital technology and it is being sophisticated with time, Gemini has a huge potential to transform the role of a tech assistant. With its innovative features and rapid expansion, Gemini holds immense potential to not only meet but exceed user expectations. By fully operationalizing Gemini, Google is well-positioned to capture a broader market, delivering a smarter, more intuitive experience that caters to the evolving needs of its customers.
