According to The Information on Friday, which cited a person with firsthand knowledge of the matter, Alphabet's Google fired hundreds of workers in its platforms and devices division on Thursday. This division is responsible for developing the Chrome browser, Pixel phones, and Android software.
According to the article, the layoffs come after the corporation made buyout offers to the organization's employees in January.
In February, Bloomberg revealed that Google has reduced staff in its cloud division, but that the changes only affected a small number of teams.
A Google representative told The Information,
“Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively, and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January."
A request for response from Reuters was not immediately answered by Google. The most recent round of layoffs comes after Google reduced its headcount in 2023, laying off about 6% of its employees worldwide. Even with additional layoffs since then, Google still employs about 180,000 people overall.
