He may have written some classic hits, but Prince has no ‘Kiss’ to give in his latest ‘Purple Rain’ of vitriol against ‘teh internets’, which the diminutive pop star says ‘is finished’.

Is this a ‘Sign of the Times’, or simply an attempt by the artist to propel sales of his latest album, 20TEN, which isn’t going to be made available in shops, instead it is to be given away in the UK with copies of the Daily Mirror.

Speaking to the Mirror, Prince slammed, like, this whole Internet thing, saying it is over, finished, dead, last year’s number. At the risk of being a rock ‘n’ roll reactionary, there’s no stopping the singer’s dissing of the iPod, iPhone, digital music scene – just take a look:

“The internet’s completely over,” he says, “I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.

“The internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good.”

Apparently, said the artist, these iPods and MP3 players and doo-hickey are just about numbers (digital, right?) and “that can’t be good for you”.

Right, and the format used to record CDs is analogue, is it, Prince?

  1. he just wanted some low price attention..which you people are certainly giving to him…lol… poor chap!

  2. The poor guy, it shows he’s completely behind the times… :-/

I mean I suppose I can understand where he’s coming from with regards to MTV… BUT there are SO MANY more people involved in the internet than there ever was with MTV. It just plainly shows that he doesn’t understand the internet and its potential.

Either that or he’s playing a very clever game with the media, knowing that he’d get such a reaction. It certainly brought the attention of his new album to me… hmm…

  3. I think what he meant is that it is dead to the extent that it no longer provides help for the artist. I.E. music sharing, piracy & download infringement. This WILL be teh downfall of music & all of your favorite artist..
