The fireside chat between Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella at Meta’s LlamaCon conference brought some headline-worthy revelations from the tech world. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that 20 to 30 percent of the company’s code is being ‘written by software,’ referring to AI. This revelation highlights how deeply artificial intelligence is reshaping the foundations of the tech industry, built on innovation and evolution.
In the candid chitchat, Zuckerberg asked Nadella for a rough estimate of how much of Microsoft’s code is generated by AI to date. For that, Nadella responded that the company is seeing mixed results in AI-generated code across different languages. He also informed Zuckerberg that Python is showing more progress in the AI domain than C++.
When the same question was asked by Satya Nadella to Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO showed ignorance and, without denying that the company’s code is generated by AI, just responded that he does not know how much of Meta’s code is AI-generated.
Recently, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott expressed that by 2030, 95% of coding will be done by AI. He stated
“Now, that doesn’t mean that the AI is doing the software engineering job, and so I think the more important and interesting part of authorship is still going to be entirely human,”
Similarly, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, also revealed last week that the company’s 30% code is being generated by AI.
AI Changing the Tech Landscape
These revelations indicate that AI is transforming the tech landscape at the macro level, including programming, and tech giants are embracing this transformation. With the integration of AI-generated code in programming, the role of developers is changing, with more focus on high-level design and problem-solving rather than writing every line of code. Similarly, software engineers are also shifting toward overseeing AI tools, ensuring quality and accuracy.
