One NZ, formerly Vodafone NZ, has announced that they have installed 17 new cell sites across Aotearoa. They have been working on it since May, and revealed on 27 June 2025, that they have not only built the sites but also activated the 5G network on 9 of them. Cell sites are either newly built or upgraded from older 3G/4G sites.
5G is in high demand in this era. It is a fast network with low latency, and it enhances the potential of connected devices. Not only limited to communication devices, but it’s also becoming common on business sites such as ports. Recently, Verizon landed a contract to build 5G in the UK’s Thames Freeport, one of the city’s biggest tax-advantaged trade zones.
New Zealand launched its 5G network on 10 December 2019, becoming the 22nd country globally to do so. Now they are working to expand it, because they know it’s not a luxury, it’s a necessity of the digital world. 5G helps us to do our daily work in seconds, whether it’s downloading a large file, making a video call from a factory basement, it’s got us covered.
New Zealand, where towns are isolated, 5G is vital for those who feel digitally deprived. In today’s world, where we rely on tech more than we do on food at times, a faster and more secure network is a lifeline.
One NZ has announced that they have successfully enabled 17 new cell sites to be completed in May, with 9 new locations in Aotearoa to benefit from 5G technology.
