Starlink Enters Vietnam, a New Era for Satellite Internet Access

Vietnam is taking a brave step forward into the digital age. It has approved the trial launch of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service, shaping a future with high-speed, low-latency internet access in urban and remote areas alike. Thus, Vietnam joins the digital transformation of Southeast Asia, which could change, among other things, its internet architecture and economic relations.

The Vietnam government has authorized a trial run of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service, an important telecommunication milestone in the country. An official statement issued on Wednesday mentions that the trial phase will run until the end of 2030 and that there are no restrictions regarding foreign ownership of the service.

Strategic Move in Economic Considerations

Some analysts consider Vietnam’s approval for Starlink’s entry a strategic move to enhance economic ties with the U.S. and avoid the risk of American tariffs. Rapidly industrialized countries in Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam, have found various options to stay competitive in global trade, and collaborating with American companies such as SpaceX may very well be part of this approach.

Starlink currently operates in over 100 markets and aims to provide high-speed internet connectivity to remote and underserved areas using a broadband satellite network that works at low Earth orbits. The statements made by the government of Vietnam confirmed that Starlink would be granted permission to provide fixed and mobile internet services across Vietnam, including in-flight connectivity.

The trial phase, however, comes with a subscriber cap. The government has placed a ceiling of 600,000 users during the pilot phase, which describes the more cautious approach of integrating satellite-based internet within Vietnam’s digital infrastructure.

License Uncertainty

It is unclear whether SpaceX has applied for the license to launch Starlink services in Vietnam. Despite that, this situation follows the country’s broader digital transformation and could harmonize the provision of internet access in the two equally important urban and rural domains.

Future Considerations

The performance of Starlink service in Vietnam will be a key determinant in the government’s decision regarding scaling up the service after the trial period, which runs until 2030. With the entry of a leading U.S. technology company into Vietnam’s telecommunications space, digital outreach expands, and U.S.-Vietnam ties strengthen against the backdrop of changing global trade policies. As Vietnam pursues further technological advances, this collaboration with SpaceX could be a historic moment in the country’s journey toward digital connectivity.
