And nosy tourists and stalkers are pleased!

At today’s Chirp conference, Twitter’s Evan Williams announced that Twitter will soon add a location feature to Twitter called “Points of Interest”.

The feature, as Twitter’s Evan Williams put it, is “a way to see where a tweet is coming from but also a way to read all the tweets coming from specific nearby landmarks.”

So let’s say you hear something funny is going on near the Brooklyn Bridge – you head to Twitter and find out what the deal is by reading the tweets of people who are near the famous site.

Of course, analysts were quick to wonder whether or not this was an attack on location services like Foursquare or Gowalla. But Williams suggested that this feature would complement rather than compete with those sites.

I’m inclined to agree; the appeal of Foursquare and Gowalla largely lies in their competitive aspect and ongoing information about bars, restaurants and other hangouts. I can’t see Points of Interest competing there – and indeed, it doesn’t seem as if it’s meant to.
