WhatsApp is working on a new tool that will make chatting across different languages much easier. The platform is currently testing a feature called “Translate messages” for Android users, according to the latest report from WABetaInfo.
This new feature will allow users to translate messages directly inside WhatsApp, without needing to copy text or use a third-party app. The translation will work using downloadable language packs, which means users can enable translation even without an internet connection.
How the Translation Feature Works
Users will be able to either:
- Turn on automatic translation for any individual chat.
- Translate messages manually by long pressing a message and tapping the “Translate” option.
Currently supported languages include Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian. More languages might be added in the future. Although the translation settings are turned off by default, users can enable them from the chat screen or through the storage settings. This feature will also be available in WhatsApp Channels, making it even more useful for large audiences.
Meta AI Behind the Feature
The app will automatically detect messages that need translation, but manual translation will also be available at any time. Once you enable translation for a conversation, WhatsApp will download the required language pack for on-device use. Since this tool runs on the device itself, the translations may not be as perfect as cloud-based services, but it offers better speed, privacy, and control. The technology is expected to be powered by Meta AI, showing how Meta is bringing more smart tools into WhatsApp.
Right now, this feature is part of the beta version and available only to selected users. However, it is expected to roll out to more people in the coming weeks.
