Alibaba Group and the BMW Group have revealed a collaboration to create an AI engine in China for the company’s upcoming cars.
Enhancing BMW’s Smart Cockpit with Alibaba’s AI
The partnership will improve BMW’s smart cockpit functions by integrating Banma’s in-car AI framework with Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen models. The BMW Advanced Personal Assistant will be updated by the new AI engine to better serve Chinese customers. In 2026, BMW intends to introduce the Neue Klasse generation in China, where it will make its debut.
Advanced AI for Natural Speech Interactions
The goal of this AI-powered technology is to enable more organic speech interactions. Additionally, it will improve in-car mobility services. In April 2025, BMW will display these features at the Shanghai Auto Show.
Alibaba’s Aggressive Investment in AI Technology
Alibaba has been making a strong shift to artificial intelligence (AI) in recent months, promising to spend over 380 billion yuan ($52 billion) on data centers and other AI technology over the following three years. In February, CEO Eddie Wu declared that the company’s “primary objective” is now to develop general artificial intelligence. Additionally, the business was awarded a coveted position in China, where it would supply AI technology for Apple’s iPhones, which are scheduled to launch in the upcoming months.
