As Trump’s newly imposed tariffs rolled over on Liberation Day, China retaliated with AI-generated videos, mocking high tariffs on Chinese products. On China’s state-run English-language broadcast CGTN, an automated female voice sang in a video
“‘Liberation Day’, you promised us the stars. But tariffs killed our cheap Chinese cars,”
The two-minute, 42-second clip was captioned with a warning, “Track is AI-generated. The debt crisis? 100 percent human-made.”
The state-run news agency Xinhua also posted an AI-generated video on X, depicting a robot named TARIFF that chose to self-destruct rather than follow the command of its creator for high tariffs.
Trump’s Tariffs on China
In long-awaited Trump tariffs, the president imposed additional 34% tariffs on Chinese goods. Since returning to power, Trump has already levied two tranches of 10% additional duties on Chinese imports, accelerating tariffs on Chinese goods to 54%.
China’s Reciprocal Tariffs on the US
The Chinese government retaliated with reciprocal 34% tariffs on all US imports, starting from April 10. The State Council Tariff Commission of China stated
“This practice of the US is not in line with international trade rules, seriously undermines China’s legitimate rights and interests, and is a typical unilateral bullying practice,”
These newly imposed tariffs by both China and the US have caused turbulence in the global economy. The stock markets are hitting their rock bottoms with all industries affected. It is being speculated that it would further escalate the ongoing trade war between China and the US with serious consequences for multi-corporations. It may lead to the global recession.
BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s state-run media has taken to the internet with AI-generated videos, featuring dancing robots and fraught consumers, to chide U.S. President Donald Trump and tariffs they say threaten high inflation and economic distress for Americans.
“‘Liberation Day’, you promised us the stars. But tariffs killed our cheap Chinese cars,”
an automated female voice sings in a video on the website of China’s CGTN, a state-run English-language broadcaster, over a shot of a woman at a kitchen table staring at an empty fork.
The two-minute, 42-second clip, referring to Trump’s use of “Liberation Day” for the day of his tariff announcement, was captioned with a warning:
“Track is AI-generated. The debt crisis? 100 percent human-made.”
Another video posted on the X.com page of state-run news agency Xinhua, also generated by artificial intelligence, shows a robot named TARIFF that chooses to self-destruct rather than follow its creator’s orders for high tariffs that bring “trade wars and unrest”.
