Small FPV Drones Revolutionizing Modern Warfare Dynamics, Claim Dominance.

In an interview, the CEO of a technology-focused defense contractor stated that small, first-person view (FPV) drones are quickly emerging as the most important weapon in contemporary warfare. The extensive and successful deployment of small Aircraft by both sides in the Ukraine-Russia conflict has signaled an important shift in how countries will approach and conduct wars in the future, according to Ryan Gury, CEO of Performance Drone Works (PDW).

Drones in the Russia-Ukraine War

Since Russia began its massive bombardment of Ukraine in February 2022, small drones have been extensively involved in the conflict in that neighbouring country. Small FPV drones are affordable and portable enough to be used as weapons systems by any combat unit, negating the need for costly and large tactical weapons systems.

The Need for Advanced Radio Systems

The ongoing dispute between Russia and Ukraine has brought attention to the need to upgrade the radio systems that keep such UAVs moving and achieving their targets, in addition to the growing use of drones in battle, he said.

According to him, defense-related suppliers like PDW are working diligently to create radio systems that are specifically designed and intended to be used in this new form of electronic warfare.

Evolving Radio Systems for Tactical Warfare

“We think that all radio systems must evolve,”

He stated.

“There is a huge radio industry in the United States, worth many billions of dollars, and we think all of those (systems) need to change dramatically in order to serve tactical jamming.”

The Growth of the U.S. Drone Defense Industry

Gury stated that he anticipates the defense sector of the U.S. drone industry to grow rapidly as more businesses realize the DOD requires contractors who can create systems and products that meet the standards of the National Defense Authorization Act. He went on to say that he is happy to see more competition for the military’s business.

Competition and Growth in the Defense Drone Market

In his concluding remarks, he stated that

“For businesses like ours that are looking for industry growth, nothing could be greater than more competition and more growth in the space. It’s just better for our country, so we like it, and we encourage it. This is the new king of combat.”
