OpenAI at War: The $300 Billion Valuation But Battle for AGI

$300 Billion, 500 Million Users – The Sharks Are Circling OpenAI

Is OpenAI cracking under its own weight? It’s a surprising thing that even with the $300 million valuation and around 500 million users a week, a company is still struggling. It’s seeming to be one of the most thought provoking cases in the tech world right now.

You might wonder, how is it possible, but this is happening. OpenAI has been leading the chatbot race since November 2022. But nowadays, it’s facing risks from competitors like Google, Meta, and Amazon.

With this increasing number of competitors, OpenAI is feeling at risk, and its workers are doing their best to maintain their pace in this race. Due to this, it has postponed its open-weight AI model.

According to a statement by Sam Altman, OpenAI is working on additional safety training. Basically, OpenAI doesn’t want to leave any gaps for others to step in. Therefore, they’re trying to stay ahead in the race by constantly improving their models.

On the other hand, their competitors are also working to lead this race. Recently, Google has launched its own AI chatbot, which allows users to ask questions and follow up on them. Google noticed that users are prioritizing chatbots instead of reading content on websites. So, they introduced it to keep users on Google, to generate more revenue and fame in the tech world.

As the world advances in the tech field, the risks are growing as well. Apart from the competition between companies, these chatbots have deeply impacted our daily lives. People are starting to rely on them instead of using their own natural abilities.

Recently, we came to know about a heartbreaking case when a child committed suicide, after getting too attached with a chatbot. His mother explained that he started relying on it, to the point he stopped communicating with his friends and family around him. This is a reminder that these chatbots are becoming dangerous.

In this AI race, it feels like we’ve forgotten the value of human life and dignity. We need a pause to rethink whether we are controlling AI or are being controlled by AI.

It had just secured another $40 billion in funding, the largest private tech deal ever. That valued the company at $300 billion, which is the highest of any startup on the planet. Its flagship product, ChatGPT, was attracting some 500 million users a week, far more than its closest competitor.
