Internet connection performance has become pivotal for anyone and everyone in the current day scenario. With that said, ex-CEO of “Ookla” aka Doug Suttles, introduced the Orb application targeted towards personal internet networks. Suttles, known for his invention of Speedtest.net, which is essentially the go-to “internet speed” measure application, is ready to reinvent and go beyond traditional speed tests while measuring Orb’s stability, responsiveness, and reliability in real-time.
Orb Assists in Tracking Internet Usage
According to Suttles, in a recent interview,
“speed tests are just like engine dipsticks used as indicators to check whether the engine’s functionality is based on fuel consumption, in reality it guides functionality.”
The application considers three main metrics: responsiveness, reliability, and speed. Responsiveness includes elements such as lag, jitter, latency, and packet loss. Reliability measures responsiveness over time alongside sustained packet loss. Speed refers to download and upload performance. All three metrics are evaluated at set time increments ranging from 1 minute to 24 hours, providing users with a detailed picture of their network’s performance.
Based on the aforementioned metrics, users are provided with a score that evaluates the overall performance of their connection. Higher scores are indicative of better performance, a score over 80 signifies a good connection, while a score below 70 suggests there might be some issues. If a user scores below 80, Orb utilizes LLMs to provide step-by-step instructions aimed at boosting network performance. This goes far beyond what standard speed tests offer, which is minimal guidance and raw numbers.
A game changer for enterprises and consumers alike
Orb’s compatibility with devices extends to iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, Raspberry Pi, and Steam Deck. This broad coverage allows for continuous tracking to be done on different devices without limitations. The influence of Orb does not stop at personal use. The app is expected to be very beneficial for enterprises as well as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) by providing them with an advanced monitoring system complete with real-time alerts and reports. With a funding boost of $3.8 million, Orb is focusing on becoming an important player in network optimization, which is paving the way for secondary adoption in both business and residential settings. In cases where the internet is critical, Orb stands out as an example that promises to radically change how we monitor and optimize our lives digitally. Orb offers a glimpse into the future of managing the Internet from a performance standpoint, whether it is for troubleshooting at home or managing entire enterprise networks.
