US Army Meets Apple For Mobile War Toy Talks

You know you’ve made it when the US Army knocks at your door to ask for help.

And that’s exactly what happened this month when Major General Nick Justice and several members of his staff traveled to Cupertino to discuss using Apple’s solutions in the field.

Major General Justice leads the US Army’s Research, Development, and Engineering Command.

He’s considering dumping some of the Army’s proprietary systems in favour of consumer products, including Apple’s army of mobile solutions.

Apple gave its Army visitors a much-coveted tour of its labs and talked about how the military is already using Apple technology. They’re thinking about deploying iPhones, iPads, iMacs and MacBooks in the field.

“Apple technologies offer unique and proven solutions with intuitive designs that allow users to learn quickly without a training manual,” said Ron Szymanski, CERDEC’s lead computer scientist on the project. “The Army would like to leverage Apple’s experience when designing military applications.”

Dr. Gerardo J. Melendez, director, CERDEC Command and Control Directorate, said, “As we push to develop more commercial capabilities to meet Army information and knowledge management needs, it’s important that we engage companies such as Apple because we stand to benefit just as much from their lessons learned and best practices,” Melendez said.

“Eliminating unnecessary processes or degrees of trial and error can only help us as we transition applications that can be deployed to numerous tactical levels throughout the Army.”
