Tech tycoon Elon Musk recently made a startling assertion on X that robots would outperform highly trained human surgeons in a few years, and in about five years, robotic precision will surpass that of the best human surgeons. Musk cited Neuralink’s use of a robot for brain-computer electrode implantation to highlight the promise of advanced robotics in surgery. Musk claimed that the process needed to be completed at a pace and accuracy that were unattainable by humans.

A surgeon who has performed robot-assisted surgery added to the discussion by stating, “Misleading!!” The surgeon performs the surgery utilizing the robot as an advanced tool on the console, not the robots themselves. Every movement made by the surgeon is repeated and improved by the robot. They are not surgeons, but they are excellent tools! I’ve performed more than 2,400 difficult GI disease robot-assisted operations. I cannot delegate complex decision-making to a robot since each patient is unique!

According to Reuters, Neuralink, Elon Musk’s brain implant business, was worth $5 billion in 2023 based on privately traded stocks. The Founders Fund, chaired by Peter Thiel, had already raised $280 million for the business.

In a report given by Reuters, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first denied Neuralink’s proposal. Later on, though, the FDA gave the corporation permission to move forward with the trials, which are already in progress.

Musk has big aspirations for Neuralink, seeing the device as a tool for those with disabilities as well as healthy people. He thinks the device might be utilized to treat convulsions with rapid surgical insertions at nearby institutions.

In connection with this development, Neuralink’s rival, Synchron Inc is also developing an implant that would enable those with motor impairments to type on a computer.
