In the post-truth era, in which facts have lost their importance in public discourse, and the polarization of personal beliefs is preferred over factual accuracy, Microsoft made an ironic statement about the use of its AI technology and Azure cloud in the ongoing Gaza conflict. The tech giant claimed that Microsoft works with customers around the world, including the Israeli Ministry of Defence (IMOD). Still, no evidence has been found indicating that Microsoft’s technology has been used to harm people in Gaza.
The tech giant wrote in an apologetic tone.
“Our commitment to human rights guides how we engage in complex environments and how our technology is used. We share the profound concern over the loss of civilian life in both Israel and Gaza and have supported humanitarian assistance in both places.”
Microsoft’s Commercial Ties with IMOD
Microsoft confirmed that the company is working with the Israeli Defence Ministry in a commercial capacity, providing professional services, Azure cloud service, Azure AI service, language translation, and protection of its national cyberspace against external threats. The company also ensured that this commercial tie is based on Microsoft’s terms of service, including the ‘Acceptable Use Policy’ and ‘AI Code of Conduct,’ which prohibit its technology from being used to harm civilians. However, the company also claimed that the tech giant provided special access to IMOD beyond the terms of its commercial agreements during an emergency.
Microsoft Acknowledged Limited Emergency Support to Israel
Microsoft accepted that the company provided limited emergency support to the Israeli government in the weeks following October 7, 2023; however, the purpose of this emergency service was to rescue Israeli hostages and not harm civilians in Gaza. Nevertheless, the tech giant maintained its claim that the emergency support was provided with significant oversight and limited basis.
Microsoft Reviewed Its Technology Assistance to Israel
Microsoft claimed that the tech giant conducted an internal review and hired an external firm for independent fact-finding against the allegations that the company’s technology is being used against the people in Gaza. During this investigation, interviews with employees were conducted, and relevant documents were analyzed to find out whether the technologies were used to harm Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
Although Microsoft has made the strong assertion that its technologies have not been used to harm civilians in Gaza, it is ironic because Israel heavily relies on advanced technology for surveillance and intelligence in Gaza, which are core to Microsoft’s offerings. The notion by Microsoft that its technology is being used in a limited capacity offers little reassurance when even limited use can contribute to systems of targeting and control.
