Did the departure of the Tesla Roadster leave an electric sports car-shaped hole in your heart? You might want to consider a trip to Europe. The Spirra, a sports car from South Korea’s Oullim Motors, is about to launch on the Continent, and there are plans for it to go electric. According to Autovisie, a group of businesspeople recently started Spirra Europe in the Netherlands with the goal of converting the Spirra into an electric car. It’s almost the reveres of VL Automotive’s plan to replace the electrified powertrains of Fisker Karmas with Chevy small-block V8s. The stock Spirra is powered by a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that’s rumored to make up to 600 horsepower, but Spirra Europe says its electric powertrain will match the gasoline version’s performance.
The South Korean sports car known as the Spirra, built by Oullim Motors, is about to launch on the European market. However, instead of the usual mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged V-6, the Spirra sold in Europe will be fitted with an electric powertrain. According to Autovisie, a Dutch businessman by the name of Roland Notermans together with several partners from Germany has formed the startup Spirra Europe. Based in Friesland, in the Netherlands, Spirra Europe will be responsible for building the chassis and installing the electric powertrains. Spirra Europe’s electric powertrain is said to offer similar performance to that of the gasoline-powered Spirras, the most powerful of which delivers as much as 600 horsepower. But the electric Spirra will be an all-wheel-drive car, whereas the gasoline Spirra only has rear-wheel drive. The electric Spirra is expected to be launched at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next March. It’s likely the styling of the car will be updated by then. The design for the Spirra was first conceived as far back as the 1990s, although it remains contemporary. Built almost entirely by hand, the car features a spaceframe chassis and carbon fiber body.
