TikTok is officially discontinuing TikTok Notes and its short-lived rival Instagram on May 8. The photo-sharing app was launched last year to be tested in the markets of Canada, Australia, and Vietnam, but failed terribly.
Lemon8 Emerges as the Preferred Alternative
Consumers are diverted to Lemon8, another app owned by ByteDance, which offers features similar to those of the photo-sharing app. In a statement, TikTok confirmed that it will integrate the notes option into the Lemon8 app, calling it a “dedicated space” for photo content.
While TikTok hasn’t provided a clear reason for the sudden shutdown of the notes feature, the low adoption rate is most likely to be the culprit. By December 2024, Lemon8 had 12.5 million active users, making it a big choice for creators. The company is encouraging users to download their Notes data before the shutdown and continue sharing content on Lemon8, which offers more features like creative tools, filters, and templates.
A Strategic Move Amid U.S. Ban Concerns
ByteDance is positioning Lemon8 as a potential backup plan if tik tok gets banned in the U.S. last year, Tiktok and Lemon8 integrated the platforms for seamless cross sharing and transitioning process. While tik tok is facing an expected ban on April 5, and the push for Lemon8 is the biggest evidence and move to maintain its influence in digital Landscape.
