What is Wordle?

Wordle is a fun and simple online game that became a big hit in 2021. In this game, there’s one secret five-letter word every day that everyone in the world tries to guess. You have to use logic and clues to figure it out.

Wordle became super popular at the end of 2021 after the creator Josh Wardle added a way for people to share their game results using a grid made of emojis. This cool idea made it fun to show off your score. Because of that, many other Wordle-style games were made.

In early 2022, The New York Times bought Wordle (they didn’t tell us the price), and by 2024, people had played Wordle a total of 5.3 billion times! That’s why it’s now one of the best word games to play online every single day.

How to Play Wordle

It’s really easy to start! You just type in any five-letter word. Then, the game gives you hints:

  • If a letter is in the right spot, it turns green.
  • If the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot, it turns yellow.
  • If the letter isn’t in the word at all, it turns gray.

You get six tries to find the right word. And yes, sometimes the same letter can appear more than once in the answer.

You can play Wordle free on the New York Times website, apps, Meta Quest headsets, and Discord. The game resets every night at midnight local time. If you log into your NYT account, you can even track your wins and streaks!
